I'd like to report on some of the progress of the field work and improvements that have been ongoing lately.
First of all, we have recently had someone that has remained "Anonymous" to everyone that I have spoken to about this recently, that came by the field and used some sort of a tractor or blade possibly, and dressed up the parking lot area out South of, and in front of the buildings and did a very fine job of fixing that up nicely. Thank you kindly to whoever the anonymous person(s) is/are. That area sure looks great!!!
Buzz Haviland, Terry Davis and myself hauled away the old broken picnic table from the field along with the old "Green room" building and other various eyesore items using my flatbed trailer and pickup, that were piled up near the south boundary fence line area to the Phantom Canyon Landfill. At the same time we got rid of that old broken picnic table, I brought out and donated another picnic table for use, in place of the old one. It will need a board or so repaired or replaced on it, along with tightening up nails and hardware if anyone has the time or material to do so. That would definitely be appreciated. Possibly we can also get it painted the same color as the remaining tables to match soon, using the paint stored in the storage building, if anyone would like to take that task on also. I'd like to thank Terry and Buzz for their help. It was most definitely appreciated.
Buzz Haviland also brought out his John Deere riding mower and spruced everything up quite nicely this past week also. Thanks to Buzz Haviland for taking a lot of pride in this great facility.
I had an old driveway drag made from a piece of chain link fencing that I have donated to the club,to use on the roadways on the property along with also using it on the parking lots and pit areas too when needed. It is stored out near the rest of the field implements and can be pulled by anyone, with any type of vehicle or tractor.
We as a club still need to either purchase, or possibly have someone donate a flat point style shovel to the club, to replace one of the two that came up missing earlier this flying season also yet. We already were donated a round point style shovel a few weeks ago by Steve Stafford, and that is definitely appreciated. Thanks Steve.
We now have enough roll roofing felt to be used for replacing the roofing when we get, either donated or purchased by the club, approximately 3-4 squares of asphalt shingles, to replace the roofs on both the impound building as well as the storage building. I had a roll of it left over from the old house where I used to live, that I wont be needing anymore where I am living at now, so I dropped that roll of felt paper off in the storage building for the club's use. It appears we have enough galvanized roofing nails to complete that task in stock already too. We may possibly need some new edge flashing to go around the perimeter of both roofs after we tear off all of the old roofing. I called Ace Hardware Co. today (Aug. 29th 2012) in Canon City, and it goes for $4.29 per 10 foot long piece, and I think 10 sticks total may take care of any needs we may run into if we were to have to replace every piece of the flashing on both buildings.
If you are available to at anytime, or you just happen to be at the field flying, if you can please take a few minutes to grab a shovel and back fill in a few prairie dog holes, or chop a couple of weeds around various parts of the club field and runway, that would sure help out with the overall looks and upkeep of this great facility. Thanks everyone.
Recently I went around several areas at the field, and applied an ant-killer product that I purchased to try to get rid of several ant piles that I've seen cropped up in various places around the field. Let me know of any ant piles that I haven't gotten to, along with it's location, and I'll apply the ant killer to those piles also.
It's now getting to be about time to re-apply some weed killer around the different areas of the club field, and I'll be bringing my weedkiller and handheld pump sprayer back there to the club field soon, to spray the weeds again where needed. If you see any particularly bad areas that I may have missed, please let me know also.
I also hope to get information back from several people I have spoken to, about donations of materials, labor and money, to be able to report back a more accurate cost estimate at the September monthly club meeting about the Flight-line shade coverings in the pits as an upcoming project also. Please contact me ASAP with information about donations of materials, labor and money that you can help with this project, so I can get it accurate for the meeting report coming up very soon. If you have "whatever" to donate or sell, we can find a use for it somehow no doubt.
I certainly do appreciate all the help and hard work that several members, and even some non-members have done, and continue to do, to improve and maintain this clubs fine facilities for every one's enjoyment.
One more suggestion to please consider if you would is this, if you can possibly remember to bring a plastic gallon jug or two of water to pour into the "Blue-room" tank to keep the water level up high enough in the outhouse, that is most definitely appreciated. One trick that I try to use for myself to recall bringing water with me is this:
I try to remember to bring fuel to fly with, so I also try to remember to bring water for the toilet. In this intense heat we have been suffering through, the water level evaporates very rapidly in that tank and needs replenished quite often.
I don't have email addresses or other contact information for a few of the newer members of the club yet, so if you happen to see some of the newer members of the club, please let them know about some of these items for all of our sake also please.
If you have any other concerns about the field maintenance or any other needs, please feel free to contact me at anytime day or night on my cell phone at 719-240-6805, or in person also.
THANK YOU ALL!!!

This excited look says it all....!!!!
I was contacted by my very good friend John up in Rapid City, South Dakota to see what all pieces and parts I may have laying around to donate to John's grandson Trever who is 8 years old now, and wants to learn to fly RC planes, in hopes that by next summer when his "Gampy" comes down from SD to visit him, he will be ready to fly solo with gampy.
I told John that it was an honor and my pleasure to try and support his grandson in his endeavor to learn to fly, and I would look around and see if I was able to come up with enough pieces and parts to assemble a trainer style airplane for Trever.
As it was I have a Hobbico Avi-star kit and numerous spare pieces and parts that I gathered up including a couple of old 72mhz Futaba TX's and Rx's along with a wall charger for the plane and radio setups and lots of miscellaneous pieces that I packed up and sent to Oklahoma where Trever lives with his family. He has joined the AMA and a local flying club there and the instructors and several members are already amazed at how well he knows how to fly at such a young age. Flying with gampy in SD has its good benefits there I'd say.
Now Trever is bouncing around with excitement trying to wait for his instructor to help assemble the Avi-star ARF kit now and start his instruction. The instructor was going to allow Trever to try his hand at a landing on one of the club's trainers that they flew but the 20mph crosswind gusts were just a bit much for a pilot of 8 years old just yet.....give him a bit of time and watch out tho.
Gampy is sending a brand new flight box setup and a ton of miscellaneous items to his grandson to have on hand for his use and needs also.
I got a phone call from a VERYYYYY thankful and excited young man earlier today thanking me profusely for the trainer and as we got to talking I have to say I can tell in just the short time we visited on the phone that he is going to be a very mature and capable young man and should be a fast learner too. He already is very proficient in his takeoff and landing skills from flying with his gampy and also his ability to fly is quite astonishing from what I have been told also.
Hopefully we get and keep another member in the ranks of RC Pilots for a life time of pleasure and enjoyment from here on out in this young mans life.
Enjoy the pictures, and I will try to get updates and other pictures as I receive them from a very proud Grandfather and also his Mother and Father too.

Flying Report for Saturday
Great Planes Escapade |
Sorry, I took no pictures today, but here is a photo of an Escapade similar to Mark's plane.
I brought out my J-3 Cub and got in three flights until the wind picked up. It was strange that there were so few of us flying today. I guess most were freaked out by the wind forecast.

Fremont County Fire Ban Lifted
I am copying and pasting this information from the Canon City Daily Record Newspaper to pass along to the readers and members of the Fremont County Radio Control Club web site.
Fremont County Commissioners lift fire ban
By RACHEL ALEXANDER alexanderr@

He said the county has had seven or eight fires this season, none exceeding three acres in size and only one being human caused. Lightening caused the majority of the fires.
"This weather is still very fickle," Commissioner Ed Norden said. "We still have some very dry weather ahead."
As of noon Tuesday, the CaƱon City Fire Protection District rescinded its fire ban. The Bureau of Land Management also has lifted its ban in the county.
End:
Be safe while flying at the field. Please watch out for the use of tobacco products and any types of open flames still.
This appears to be good news for the residents of Fremont County and surrounding regions, even though the vegetation is still tinder dry in places, so please be cautious when outdoors, as we do not need any further wildfires.

Saturday flying report for August 4th, 2012
I arrived at the field on Friday afternoon Aug. 4th 2012, and set up my canopy and dropped off my plane hauler / slash / camper at the field and set things up there with my grandson Alex. From there we left the field and went to town to get supplies and such for the camping and the Saturday BBQ. Upon returning to the field there were several members already there preparing for the Friday night club meeting. After a generous amount of socializing with several members and their family members the meeting got underway. Upon finishing the monthly club meeting at the field, which by the way, is also a first for me in my short tenure as a member of this great group, and I thoroughly enjoyed holding it at the field, and am looking forward to having it there again much more often too.
After the meeting more camaraderie and social hour was enjoyed by all in attendance until the very late hours of the night, under the beautiful Colorado star filled sky, joined by a large bright full moon. Upon retiring to bed for the night, some few short sleep-less hours later, I came to realize the air mattress in my trailer now has a slow air leak in it and it turned into a very long and restless night of no sleep. And yet the grandson slept like a baby he reported. Grandpa was up and down all night long keeping the mattress inflated as best as could be done. I finally gave up and just deflated the mattress completely and tried to rest laying flat down on the deflated mattress. Guess how successful getting any rest that way was happening???....NOT!!!
As the morning sunrise broke Saturday, it also brought a steady heavy wind into the 25mph range until about 9 AM Saturday morning, when the winds started to try to lay down enough to attempt a couple of flights.
Kenny and Terry were chomping at the bit visiting under the shelter of the buildings out of the wind and as the winds died out we all started breaking out our aircraft and prepping them for flying. Steve, Kenny, Terry, Ron and myself all started getting in some flights, and soon here comes Dennis out to the field to fly also.
Next thing I knew and Bill stopped back by the field after taking his wife Joann to an appointment, and returned to get in some flights with his Hog-Bipe tan biplane also.
Numerous folks came to observe and visit and spectate all morning long, and there was no shortage of fine flying being put on by a large number of pilots, including Kenny doing a VERRRRRRRY fast inverted pass down the runway at no more than 2 feet off the deck heading East bound, followed by the coolest tight roll out of inverted and up and away he flew.....I noticed his shirt puffed out quite full as he was doing that spectacular fly by,, not from his heart pounding out of his chest, but rather he said the breeze was blowing is why that happened, and all that he noticed was his mouth went dry as could be, as he was doing that stunt.....HA!!!
It came time to fire up the grill and everyone started hauling out the shared food for a feast of very large proportions, to be shared and enjoyed by everyone in attendance, including some of our visitors and spectators. Hamburgers, Polish sausages and hot dogs, with all the trimmings were on the menu for the grill, and there were tons of salads of all sorts, along with deserts, cookies, potato chips and beverages of all sorts that everyone brought to share with the members.
During the feast there were still people flying and socializing everywhere that I turned and looked, along with some several individuals that will remain anonymous <ahem> ribbing and razzing Steve into trying to fly inverted down on the deck like Kenny did. A very successful high speed, low to the deck inverted pass, and Steve came back from the flight line grinning a mile wide grin also.
I am sure I am probably missing reporting on parts of the event no doubt, and anyone else that would like to, please share with the rest of the folks what all was going on for this great event.
I apologize that I did not take any crappy washed out cell phone pictures this weekend, as I was enjoying myself immensely visiting and flying, and later on cooking up some great shared food for everyone.
Thanks to everyone for the support and sharing, and I sincerely hope the outdoor club meetings can be brought back more often, and enjoyed again.

First (of the modern era) Outdoor Club Monthly Meeting
I have been a member of this club for eleven years. It that period of time we have never held our monthly meeting at our flying site. This suggestion has been brought up on several occasions only to be squashed by some of the old timers. Anyway the August meeting was held at the field on Friday, August 3rd and it was very successful. Some of the members brought their campers and stayed overnight with flying and cookout on Saturday. We had a great turnout for the meeting and it was so successful that the members decided to repeat the outdoor meeting for September. Steve Anderson and I arrived early and got in some flying before the rest of the folks arrived.
Our newest member, Lee Stodder and his family attended. Lee is into helicopter flying and it was good to get him with Ron Prewitt our other heli member. Lee said that at his former R/C club they only meet outside during flying season. they meet inside in the winter.
After the meeting, Steve got in a flight before it got too dark. He was able to make it back before the viability became impossible. He did wonder off the runway, but the landing was a success, albeit a rough success.
I wasn't able to go out to the field Saturday morning and see if anyone was flying. The cold front dropped the temps and brought in the wind. Mark organized a cookout for lunch and I'm sure it was highly successful. I'm awaiting a Saturday report from Mark (see his report, next in sequence).

Friday night club meeting and Saturday cook-out
Just a short reminder that the monthly club meeting will be held at the
field Friday evening at 7pm, rather than the annex building at the airport this
month. Along with the meeting being held at the field Friday evening, there will
also be overnight camping and flying going on after the meeting is adjourned.
Bring lots of friends and family and let's enjoy a night under the beautiful
Colorado stars.
I will offer to bring the hotdog and hamburger buns and condiments and
fixings, along with a pasta salad and a couple of varieties of soda to enjoy, if
others would like to bring some hamburger meat and hotdogs or perhaps some brats
to grill, for a Saturday lunch-time meal while camping. I will also make sure
and supply the propane for the club's grill, and will be available to do the
cooking if need be also. We may also need some silverware, napkins, cups and
plates to use along with ice for the drinks. If anyone would like to bring some
melon and chips, or perhaps some pork and beans or potato salad that would be a
nice addition to the menu also.
Any other items needed please let me know as soon as you can.
Thanks, and I hope to see everyone having a wonderful time this
weekend,
Mark J. Sullivan
P.S. I do not have Arlynn's contact information and may also be missing a
new member or two that I believe Marlowe had mentioned just joined recently, if
anyone has a way to contact them and forward this email to them or call them
personally to notify whoever I may have missed.
Thanks again,
I'm planning for about 3 dozen burgers and/or dogs....sound like
enough???
