Passing of Bill Worthen, Sr.

In Memory of
William Eugene
"Bill"
Worthen sr

Obituary for William Worthen

William (Bill) Eugene Worthen Sr., 76, passed away on August 26th, 2013 at his home with his family by his side. He was born October 26th 1936 to Willis William Worthen Jr. and Fem Beatrice Bass in Clayton, Missouri.
Bill was raised in St. Louis, Missouri, living there until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November of 1955. He served his country for seven years, a service in which he was honored to do. While on leave in Canon City he met Joan Margaret Kessler. They became engaged and married a year later on January 21st, 1960 in St. Louis, Missouri. They celebrated 53 years of marriage this year.
After getting out of the Navy, Bill worked for Public Service Company in Denver, Colorado for seven and a half years. He wanted his two children raised in a smaller community. The family moved to Canon City in 1969. Bill was employed by the Colorado Department of Corrections working his way through the ranks, retiring as a captain in December of 1992, after 23 years of service. While working at D.O.C. he attended college earning both his A.A and B.S. degree in sociology while working full time and caring for his family. He also taught as a part-time professor at Pueblo Community College teaching criminal justice classes. He held the position for twenty-four years.
Bill joined the Fraternal Organization of Masons in 1965. He was a member of the Eureka Masonic Lodge #66 A.F.and A.M. in Coal Creek, Colorado. He was a member of the Southern Colorado Consistory, Al Kaly Shrine and a member of the Fremont Shrine Club. In 1998 Bill and his wife undertook the task of the restoration of the Masonic Lodge building in Coal Creek. The building was originally built in 1879, and was destroyed in 1907 after a fire destroyed most of the town of Coal Creek. It was rebuilt in 1908. Bill had the building put on the Colorado State Historical Registry in order to obtain grant money to help in the cost of restoration. During the restoration he had a rock pedestal built in which the lodge held a comer stone setting ceremony in which a one hundred year capsule was placed in the pedestal. The restoration project was a labor of love to him.
Bill served as Worshipful Master of Eureka #66 in the years 2000 and 2001. He was their current treasurer for the past seven years. He was a devoted mason in every sense of the word. Bill was responsible for the annual Christmas parties that are held at the lodge for the children of Coal Creek.
Bill was never one to sit idle, as he had many hobbies. He was a member of the Royal Gorge Gun Club, Fremont County Radio Control Airplane Club, Train Collection Association Club both State and National, preferring the 0 Gauge Lionel trains. Despite Bill's many interests, he still found time for his family. He dearly loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; they all held a special place in his heart. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Ethel Hardwig Worthen, and grandson Charles Gius.
Bill is survived by his wife Joan, daughter Deborah (Everett) Berry and son William Jr. (Linda) Worthen, eight grandchildren and seven great –grandchildren; sister, Susan (Bill) VanMatre; and numerous nieces and nephews.

More pictures of the Flying Giants Colorado Huck Fest

8-16-13

Here are some pictures taken from last weekend's event at the Flying Giants Huck Fest held at the Arvada Airpark field in Golden, CO.

Reporting on the first ever Flying Giants Colorado Huck Fest

8-16-13

Had a really great time at the Flying Giants Huck Fest held in Colorado for it's very first time last weekend at the Arvada Airpark flying club facility. The event needs a bit of polishing yet, but overall it was considered a great success!!!
I ended up winning the grand prize in the events fundraising raffle that was held in conjunction with the event too!!!
I was sitting there at the table in their pavilion looking at all of my non winning tickets when suddenly my name was called out.....I was like "Wait, I lost some of my tickets and don't have the matching half to go along with the one that was drawn".....well if anyone knows me, they also know that my handwriting is almost illegible once the ink dries and it very unmistakably mine.....plus the phone number matched too....LOL
I thought I was still sleeping and dreaming that I'd won.....someone please pinch me!!!
Now comes the exciting part......finding what will work with my winnings....LOLOL

Introducing our Newest Member & Last Saturday's Flying

And he is Larry Shivers from Penrose, CO. Larry is new to R/C flying and is current participating in the club's training program. Larry helped out on repairing the club's mower & weed eater. Thanks Larry.
Larry Shivers at the meeting

While I am adding to the site, I'll add the following to this page. I stopped at our field on my way to pick up a prescription in Canon City. Mark and Dennis we there with their planes. Mark was flying when I arrived and when he finished his flight he was shaking like a leaf. It seems that Mark tried, for the first time, inverted flight. Way to go Mark. I didn't get a chance to see Dennis fly since I had errands to do that day.

Flying Giants Huckfest coming to a field near you soon!!!!

I wanted to let everyone know of the upcoming "Flying Giants HUCK FEST" that is fast approaching starting next Thursday August 8th, and going continuously through August 11th, 2013. The event is being held for the first time ever here in our very own state of Colorado this time around, and is sponsored by AEROWORKS Inc.

The event is being held at the Arvada Air Park flying club facility near Golden, CO. just off of CO Hwy. 93 North of town. I have included a link to the directions, along with information and flyer's for this great event and want to invite everyone to come watch this great show, and also to register to fly at the event too. Even if you are like me and not able to "Huck" an RC plane, you are more than welcome to participate and fly at anytime during this event. Don't forget to bring an electric plane to fly during the night time flying portion of this fun show too, and foamy's are a great type of plane to enjoy the night flying events too.

I plan on being there sometime on Thursday August 8th, (possibly late evening) depending on my work schedule that day, and staying through Sunday August 11th.

There are numerous give away prizes along with raffled prizes and door prizes that have been announced by the main title sponsor AEROWORKS and their representative Mark Dennis, along with all of the other fine co-sponsors and manufacturers for this event.

Don't forget to register to fly if you want to, and there is registration available at the event or in advance online too. Spectators, visitors and family members are always welcome and encouraged to visit this great show all through the event.

Camping is available on the site for free, and there are numerous lodging accommodations near the field too, for those that plan on staying. I have a room reserved at the same DAYS INN hotel that I stay at when I attend the JEFCO Aeromodler's RC auction every February. I think this hotel has great accommodations and a very hospitable staff.

I look forward to seeing all of the great pilots again that I've met up with at the past "HUCK FEST" events I attended in Rapid City, South Dakota and I'm looking forward to not having to drive the 500 plus mile one way drive this time around too. The only drawback to this one thing is I wont be in the running for the "Farthest Drive" award this time around....HA!!! Pilots, spectators and visitors have been known to attend the past events from MT, ND, SD, CO, NE, KS, MI, IA, OH, IN, ID, UT and several other areas too.

I hope to see everyone there at the event coming up soon, and here is the link to the Flying Giants forum for the information and event flyer's.

another link to the Arvada club is at the following link too:

http://www.arvadamodelers.com/

that above link includes maps and directions and field information too.

Copy and paste these links into your browser if need be, and check out all of the forums on those good websites too while you are there.

I also plan on bringing some airframes to sell at this event too.

If anyone needs any assistance with this event, please feel free to contact me anytime too.

Regards,
Mark J. Sullivan
