First Fun-Fly of 2015!!
Can you believe it ??? Our first fun-fly happened Saturday. It took Cloyce to get everyone motivated and get started competing in a "Climb 'n Glide". And almost everyone there competed. Climb for 30 seconds and then glide for as long as possible (more on the "possible") and total flight time was recorded. So here are the results:
Pilot Plane Time Min:Sec
Cloyce Senorita 6:26
Dennis Pilot 4:14
Cloyce Twist 2:09
Ron E-Stick 2:05
Bobby Twist 2:04
Marlowe Drastik 1:55
Larry Arrow 1:40
Gary Arrow 1:39
An interesting observation is how little time it takes from engine quit until meeting the ground unless you have a light, high wing plane.
In order to extend the "dead stick" landing, many of the pilots chose to stretch it too much resulting in some crashes. One Twist was destroyed and a Stick pancaked hard just to squeeze out a few extra seconds. But a good time was had by all.

Cloyce lecturing to a bunch of the guys. Notice how the new, but incomplete, sunshade is being utilized by everyone who can fit underneath it. |

Repair Report & Mystery Solved
I've had some guys ask me about my J-3 Cub which was in involved in a minor crash last year. It jumped off the runway after a short takeoff roll, and flew about 100 feet and crashed. It didn't have much airspeed and it was rather uncontrollable. Anyway, yesterday I finally got around to fixing it.
The clevis had separated from the threaded control rod. There wasn't much depth of threads on lhe clevis. I think this was the reason for the loss of control. All these months I have felt bad about my poor piloting job. I feel much better now.
Most of the damage is to the wing hold down structure |
I started on the repair job by mixing up a small batch of 30 min. epoxy and joined the broken fuselage stringers. As I was working around the fuselage, I spotted the view below.
No elevator control!! |

Flying Report for Saturday
An excellent day for flying today. Comfortable temps and mild winds. It doesn't get much better that today. We had a good turnout of flyers.
How often do three Sticks show up on the flight line? Today we had three, and they all flew quite well.
The progression of Larry Shivers in his training and learning is going quite well. He demonstrated his flying skills and appears to have moved beyond the "buddy box" stage.
I got the opportunity to get in a few flights with my Stinger II. I really enjoy flying it and the OS 55AX is a great power plant for it. It also conveniently fits into my car without having to remove its wing.
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY from left to right: Ken Conway's GP Big Stick 60, My Durafly Das Ugly Stik, and Ed Vincent's Large Yellow Stick |

More Photos From the 2015 Nitro-Chili-Burn Fun-Fly event.
What a fun time we had. I took a few pictures, I hope the captions explain them.
So ends FCRCC's 4th annual New Years Day fun-fly event. Mark you calendar for January 1st of 2016. It will be bigger and better next year!!!

Added by Mark Sullivan: There were several pilots from our club and surrounding clubs flying both during the snow squall and after the snow had stopped falling and I would like to note that, especially while it was snowing hard at the field, that the visibility was quite limited to a very short distance away from the pilots due to very low cloud cover and heavy snowfall, but their expertise in piloting their aircraft shone thruough very brightly on a cold blustery winter's day as they welcomed in the New Year. The food shared by everyone was again fantastic as it always has been in the past during this event and the company of fellow full scale pilots, skydivers and RC pilots from several clubs aroud the region was phenomenal too!!! I'd like to get a full group picture of everyone attending and supporting this fun-fly at our next event to share with everyone too!!! See you in 2016 for more fun and food!!!
At first the snow fell hard. Most everyone stayed under the shelter near Mark's propane heater, or inside the impound building which had a small propane heater in use in there also. |
Tony Brotherton's Polaris demonstrating snow skipping |
This is what it took to fly the Polaris. From the left Chuck Starck, Hannah Marie Brotherton, Tony Brotherton and Mark Siemen. A special thanks to Mark Siemen for hand launching my Spitfire. |
Can you imagine, jumpers landing at our field! That skdiver pictured heading in to land in this picture is our Club President's son Ryan Vincent. |
More skydiving jumper action. |
Everyone's eyes were on the sky. |
Same too with this group. |
Hans Miesler flying his RV-4 trailing orange smoke. He flew descending circles around the outside perimeter of the skydivers as they descended to our runway. |
More jumpers on our runway. The flags were the jumpers target. |
Hanna Marie held by her Dad. This was her third Nitro-Chili-Burn event. |
Jumpers headed to the shelter and some snacks too. |
Mark Sullivan firing up his nitro powered and ski equipped Uproar. He made a beautiful landing on those skis. I wish I had caught a pix of it. |

Our RC Club's annual "Nitro-Chili-Burn" fun fly event was a rousing success!!!!........I woke up to overcast skies and low cloud cover with zero wind but the temperature at that hour of the morning around 6 AM MST was a balmy -9 degrees Fahrenheit here at the house.....once at the field around 9:20 AM the conditions had worsened and as we were setting things up for the event the snow started falling slightly......within maybe 15 minutes or so, it was really starting to snow good, but I went ahead and fueled up my Nitro burning airplane engine and gave it a go........A white colored aircraft disappears rather quickly when the background clouds are white and down on the deck along with the white snow.......a bit of a fun challenge and a lot of fun flying in close and fast like that tho.......There were also several members of the local Experimental Aircraft Association that showed up to watch the action and we all appreciate all the support they give us all the time too....... numerous pilots got in lots of great flights from RC clubs all around the region that showed up here to support our annual event......the full scale aerobatics and skydivers were grounded with the low ceiling and minimal visibility conditions however though which wasn't a good thing..........but within about another hour and a half or so the conditions improved and the snow stopped and clouds lifted long enough for the aerobatics and skydivers to perform their feats of daring for us mere mortals stuck flying on the ground.........they put on a spectacular display to a rousing applause from everyone present watching them perform so spectacularly.......I was very relieved that we were able to get the surprise event in for all the folks there enjoying the event and we all got to see the skydivers land just a few feet away from all of us gathered out near the runway and to watch the aerobatics being performed simultaneously overhead.......once all the feats of skill and daring were completed it was time for folks to get back up flying their RC aircraft of all types and styles....there were several shared items of food to enjoy along with two huge batches of chili which were enjoyed by everyone there along with hot apple cider and hot chocolate and sweet desserts to keep everyone warm....it ended up being a really huge turnout of folks both flying and watching the fun and I am humbled by everyones show of support for this annual club event........I can not thank everyone enough for all their hard work helping out with this event and showing up and flying and having a great time ringing in the New Year......Thanks again everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!
